How to get Pets in Heartopia

In the cosy, simulation game that is Heartopia, you’ll find yourself picking up multiple hobbies including ones that involve adopting and caring for Pets. These are the Cat Caring and Dog Caring Hobbies, which will let you invite a four-legged companion home with you, and you can even teach them tricks!

Before we get too ahead of ourselves however, you first need to adopt some pets. To help with that, this guide explains exactly how to get Pets in Heartopia.

How to unlock Pets in Heartopia

To get your first pet in Heartopia, you first need to reach Level 12 of the D.G. Members Guild. At this point, you’ll be prompted to talk to Mrs. Joan about the Cat Caring Hobby in the Pet Store in the town centre. After chatting with her, you will then need to submit a Hobby Expansion Ticket to her to officially unlock the Cat Caring Hobby.

You also sadly have no option but to start with the Cat Caring Hobby, but you can go ahead and unlock the Dog Caring Hobby immediately after this!

Reaching Level 12 of the D.G. Members Guild personally took us four consecutive days of playing Heartopia, so don’t be surprised if it takes you a couple days or longer to finally start caring for cats and dogs in-game.

After unlocking the Cat Caring Hobby, speak to Mrs. Joan again to kick off the adoption process. She’ll prompt you to adopt a cat first and foremost, and will task you with choosing from the selection in-store. This selection includes three different breeds of cat or dog, and the cats and dogs available will reset daily.

Once you find a cat (or dog) that you’re ready to adopt, press ‘Adopt’, name them, and then speak to Mrs. Joan again. Your new pet will then be sent to your home!

After adopting your first cat can you then talk to Mrs. Joan about adopting a dog. The process is, fortunately, exactly the same as adopting a cat.

You will need to submit another Hobby Expansion Ticket to Mrs. Joan to unlock the Dog Caring Hobby, then you go about adopting one of the dogs in-store. After you adopt them, they’ll be sent to your home, just like your cats!

How to get more Pets in Heartopia

To get more pets in Heartopia, you need to level up both the Cat Caring and Dog Caring Hobby. You’ll gain the ability to adopt a new dog or cat upon reaching each of the below levels:

Cat Caring Level 1 – unlocks first cat.
Cat Caring Level 2 – unlocks second cat.
Cat Caring Level 5 – unlocks third cat.
Cat Caring Level 7 – unlocks fourth cat.
Cat Caring Level 9 – unlocks fifth cat.
Dog Caring Level 1 – unlocks first dog.
Dog Caring Level 4 – unlocks second dog.
Dog Caring Level 8 – unlocks third dog.

As you can see above, you can adopt a total of five cats and three dogs in Heartopia at the time of writing. To increase your Cat Caring and Dog Caring Hobby level and ultimately adopt more pets, you’ll need to spend time caring for your existing pets.

How to care for Pets in Heartopia

Caring for Pets in Heartopia is very similar to caring for the wild animals found around the town. Ideally, you want to interact with them daily by petting them and feeding them at a minimum. Much like wild animals, you’ll also be able to work out and feed them their favourite foods. With some luck, your pets might also even leave gifts for you to say thank you!

As well as petting and feeding, you can also bathe your pets and hang out with them, or buy furniture for your pets from the Pet Store (accessible via speaking with Mrs. Joan). Here, you can kit your pets out with a bed to sleep in or a Cat Tree and so forth.

Once you bond with your pet enough, you can also teach both your cats and dogs tricks, and can even take your dogs out for walks with you while exploring the world of Heartopia!
