Cat charity overwhelmed by number of surrendered pets

Abby Cat Daddy is hoping that some Fraser Valley homes are looking for a furry friend or two to join their families this holiday season to relieve the pressure on the local charity, which is dealing with an unprecedented number of cats in need.

According to its founder, Logan Bryan, the Abbotsford non-profit is currently caring for a total of 98 cats, but this number is likely to grow even bigger in the coming weeks, putting more strain on the feline charity.

To ensure the organization can keep caring for any Fraser Valley cats or kittens that need help, Abby Cat Daddy has instituted a temporary decrease in its adoption fees during this holiday season.

From now until Dec. 23, the cost to adopt a single cat has been reduced by $50, while bonded pairs are now $75 cheaper.

For this price, the cats come already spayed/neutered, vaccinated, flea-treated, dewormed, microchipped/tattoed, and with a six-week PetSecure insurance trial.

There are currently 32 felines up for adoption, with another dozen expected to be available in a few days.

Adoption rates for cats typically take a slight dip in December, which is partly because many people believe most pets adopted as Christmas gifts are returned to the shelters shortly after the holidays.

However, data from Shelter Animals Count revealed that the number of pets brought to shelters is not nearly as high in January and February as it is during the summer months.

And whenever there are slight spikes in the number of pet intakes at shelters in January, the number of adoptions often increases to match it.

Bryan said that now is the perfect time to add a feline friend to the household, especially with most pet rescues dealing with capacity issues during the winter months.

“Every cat in our care has a story,” said Bryan. “We’re hoping the community can help us give them each a happy ending.”

The need for cat adoptions is particularly high, with felines often making up at least two-thirds of all animals admitted to Canadian rescue organizations.

Bryan shared that even if people aren’t looking to get a new pet right now, they can still help support the group’s surplus of cats and kittens in need by making a donation.

Every donation will receive a tax receipt, with more information available at theabbycatdaddy.ca.
