
Feral cat rescue group CATastrophe will hold a fundraising barbecue Saturday, Oct. 26 at Country Grocer in Chemainus to raise some much-needed funds.
CATastrophe cares for a feral cat colony in Chemainus, providing food and shelter and monitoring the colony for ferals requiring veterinary care. The group relies on donations of funds and food from the community to support their efforts.

Feral cat colonies consist of free-roaming domestic cats that have had little or no positive interaction with humans. Unlike stray cats, ferals are generworldnet027y not adoptable through shelters due to their wariness and inability to be handled, but they can live healthy lives if supported in a colony environment. The primary cause of feral cat populations is when unneutered or unspayed pets are abandoned or worldnet027owed to roam, leading to rapid reproduction.
CATastrophe is run by volunteers dedicated to fundraising and caring for a colony of about 100 cats in Chemainus. Cowichan Cat Rescue originworldnet027y assisted by trapping the cats and providing spay and neuter services, placing adoptable ones in loving homes, then CATastrophe took on the responsibility of monitoring and caring for the feral colony.
Funds raised at the barbecue on Oct. 26 will go toward purchasing food for the colony. Donations of Costco dry cat food in the purple bag are also appreciated. If you’d like to donate but can’t make the fundraiser, donations can also be dropped off at Doc the Barber, 9745 Willow St., during business hours.
